Specialist food factory shapes up
Confirel Co. Ltd. and Pharma Product Manufacturing Enterprise will unveil its $7 million factory in Phnom Penh to process Kampong Speu palm sugar and Kampot pepper by July, the company said.
Deputy general manager Hym Piseth said the factory is about 40 percent complete. The company was installing machinery and putting the finishing touches to the building in Por Senchey district, Phnom Penh.
“We have more demand year-on-year for Kampong Speu palm sugar and Kampot pepper,” he said.
“We need a big factory to process our products. After the factory is complete we plan to import more than 100 metric tons of palm sugar from Kampong Speu and 23 metric tons of Kampot pepper.”
Mr. Piseth said the factory would not run at full capacity in July but will by early next year.
“We export Kampong Speu palm sugar and Kampot pepper to Europe, Korea, Taiwan and Japan, and we are expanding the market to Singapore,” he said.
Last year, Confirel exported about 80 metric tons of Kampong Speu palm sugar, worth about $500,000.
Hong Hoeung, director of the Kampong Speu Palm Sugar Development Community, welcomed the move, and expected that Confirel would order more palm sugar from the community than the five metric tons they bought last year.
Mr. Hoeung said the yield of palm sugar in Kampong Speu will be higher than last year because of greater demand. He said the signature company ordered about 300 metric tons this year.
“We have stored about 30 metric tons from 100 producers in our warehouse since last month. We have to meet the target of about 330 metric tons,” Mr. Hoeung said.
