Gunshots cop hands himself in
A police officer who fired his rifle into the air five times in Phnom Penh’s Chbar Ampov district over a family argument turned himself in yesterday after being on the loose for one night.
District police chief Em Saravuth said Svay Piseth, 34, who works at the general department of identification’s statistics section, showed up at his office after local police asked the department for cooperation from his department.
“It was a personal affair between the husband and wife over jealousy I think,” he said.
“Mr. Piseth confessed that similar disputes had happened several times before.
“He had tried to warn his wife not to drink with neighbors but she never listened.”
CCTV footage showed that after getting angry with his wife, Mr. Piseth took an AK-47 rifle and fired into the air.
He then got into his Toyota Highlander vehicle and fired more rounds into the air before he drove off from his home in Niroath commune. Mr. Saravuth said Mr. Piseth is now in Chbar Ampov district police custody for questioning before further action is taken.
“His rank doesn’t allow him to use a gun so he will be charged with illegal use of a weapon,” he said.
“We will wait for instructions from superiors on whether to hand him back to his department for punishment or send him to court.”
National Police commissioner General Neth Savoeun ordered Mr. Piseth’s arrest after news of the shooting spree broke out.
