Many pay respects to Sok An
Senior government officials, diplomats, leading businessmen and family members gathered in a park in Phnom Penh yesterday morning for the funeral of Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, who passed away last week in a Beijing hospital.
His body was taken in a slow procession of special floats from his Phnom Penh home at about 7am yesterday to the park near Wat Botum where the funeral was held.
A highly respected man who played many key roles in government and other organizations for more than three decades, Mr. Sok An’s many accomplishments were recalled yesterday in speeches by senior officials, who highlighted his many achievements for the country he served all his life.
Few have played such important roles in so many areas as Mr. Sok An.
Many senior members of the government as well as some members of the opposition were present to pay their respects at the funeral and cremation.
Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla also flew from Jakarta for the funeral and senior figures from many countries were represented.
Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife Bun Rany led government officials as they paid their respects to their colleague and friend of more than three decades.
After the cremation at about 9am yesterday morning, Mr. Sok An’s ashes were scattered in the river in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh.
