President of Laos visits

Cambodia and Laos yesterday pledged to enhance cooperation on trade, industry, agriculture and service, while urging more investment between both sides.

Prime Minister Hun Sen met with Lao President Bounnhang Vorachith at the Peace Palace yesterday.

Eang Sophalleth, Mr. Hun Sen’s assistant, told reporters after a nearly one-hour meeting that so far both countries have cooperated with each other on information exchanges and development.

“He [Mr. Bounnhang] said that both sides should urge cooperation on the trade, industrial, agriculture and service sectors and urged more investment,” he said.

“Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen totally agreed with what his excellency suggested.”

Mr. Sophalleth added that Mr. Hun Sen also urged connectivity between both countries through electricity, railways and roads which could further increase ties and cooperation between both sides.

Mr. Bounnhang, whose two-day state visit ends today, also met King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace as well as Senate President Say Chhum and National Assembly President Heng Samrin.

According to a press release by the Foreign Affairs Ministry last week, Mr. Bounnhang’s visit was an opportunity to further enhance the friendship and strengthen the cooperation in all fields between both countries.

On Sunday, both countries vowed to have a meeting to resolve a problem related to the construction of a 25 kilometer road along the border from Stung Treng City to Siem Pang district.

According to Mr. Sophalleth, both sides did not discuss the border issue.

Over the past two weeks, Lao soldiers entered Cambodian territory and prevented military engineers from constructing the strategic belt road. According to the National Police website on Monday, about 400 Lao soldiers were deployed along the border in Lao territory.

Cambodian military engineers continue to construct the road and coordinate with their Lao counterparts.
