Lao minister to visit Cambodia
Lao Foreign Affairs Minister Saleumxay Kommasith is to make a three-day state visit to Cambodia next week, during which he will meet King Nodorom Sihamoni and several Cambodian leaders.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said the delegation from Laos will visit Cambodia from Monday to Wednesday.
“During his visit, His Excellency Saleumxay Kommasith will be received by His Majesty the King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace,” it said.
“His Excellency Saleumxay Kommasith will also pay Prime Minister Hun Sen a courtesy call and will hold official talks with Senior Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn.”
Mr. Saleumxay will also attend the Cambodia-Lao Joint Commission meeting, along with senior minister Var Kim Hong, who is in charge of the Cambodian Border Affairs, following the recent opening of the Trapeang Kreal international border gate.
Prime Minister Hun Sen and Lao Premier Thongloun Sisoulith presided over the opening last Tuesday of the border gate that connects Stung Treng province with Laos’ Champasak province.
Six months earlier, Laos’ newly elected prime minister paid Cambodia a state visit, also to boost ties.
Cambodia and Laos first established diplomatic relations in June 1956 but ties were temporarily suspended during the reign of the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979. Ties resumed in the early 1980s.
