Din Puthy, the president of the Cambodia Informal Economy Reinforced Association (CIERA), was released on parole by the Appeal Court’s investigation chamber today.

Mr. Puthy has been detained in the Banteay Meanchey provincial prison, since December, on charges of deliberately driving his SUV into Pailin deputy immigration police chief Chhean Piseth during a border confrontation.

Mr. Puthy’s lawyer Kim Socheat said that the investigation chamber decided to temporarily release his client on parole. He will, however, not be allowed to leave the province and will have to answer all summons to appear in court – failing which, he will be rearrested.

Mr. Socheat said Mr. Puthy could be released from detention either this evening or tomorrow.
