A married couple from England committed suicide together on New Year’s Day while on holiday in Preah Sihanouk province, police said yesterday.

Provincial deputy police chief Colonel Bour Sothy said the victims, identified as Jeffrey Robert Wells, 36, and Imogen Saskia Goldie, 28, were discovered by their landlord yesterday morning.

“According to our provincial police report and the examination of the victims’ bodies, it is believed that this is not murder,” he told Khmer Times.

“They hanged themselves with a scarf and committed suicide inside their rented room,” he added. They were staying in Sihanoukville’s Pi commune.

In pictures uploaded by local news outlet Fresh News, the couple appear to be blindfolded and gagged. It is unclear if their arms are tied behind their backs.

The news outlet also uploaded what appeared to be a suicide note from the couple, who said their battle with mental illness, specifically depression, bipolar disorder and Asperger’s syndrome, on top of the shortcomings of Britain’s National Health Service, pushed them to take their own lives.

They also told their families in the note that they could have their remains cremated in the coastal city, which they deemed a “beautiful place,” but added that the choice remained with their next-of-kin.

Khmer Times, however, was unable to verify the authenticity of the suicide note. Police said both bodies were sent to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital to be claimed by their families.
