Man Allegedly Beaten to Death over Bicycle
A recently-released prisoner was re-arrested and charged with premeditated murder in Kandal on Saturday for allegedly beating another man to death with a brick, according to police.
Kao Samnang, 31, allegedly murdered 38-year-old Sroy Savy in Khsach Kandal district’s Svay Chrom commune while both men were drunk, district police chief Un Yung said. The murder allegedly came after Mr. Savy attempted to steal Mr. Samnang’s pushbike.
“The suspect and victim were drunk together under the suspect’s grandma’s house, which was locked up-stairs. And when they were so drunk the suspect took a brick and hit Savy many times on the head.”
Mr. Yung added that Mr. Savy’s body was discovered the next morning by neighbors, who called police.
“When the police came they saw the suspect there too, but the suspect was sleeping. The suspect was so drunk that when he hit his drinking partner five times on his head he could not run away or escape,” Mr. Yung said.
He added that Mr. Samnang had been released from provincial prison at the end of last month after serving a two-year sentence for committing intentional violence.
“During the interrogation the suspect confessed that he hit the victim because the victim previously tried to steal his bicycle. He is detained in the police office in the district and will be sent to provincial court when his case is ready,” Mr. Yung said.
Mr. Samnang could face up to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder.
