A financial executive and her husband were both charged by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday for allegedly stealing more than $370,000 from Tycoon Hong Piv’s property development company, Borey Phiphup Thmey.

Twenty-eight year old Phath Chakriya, who managed the company’s books, and her husband Hour Kosal, 29, were arrested earlier that day by military police for allegedly stealing the money and using it for Mr. Kosal’s personal business.

Mr. Piv’s lawyer Pek Vanak said the company became suspicious of Ms. Chakriya after inspecting their clients’ financial reports.

“They found out that she had looted the company’s money after many construction company owners who were clients came directly to ask for payment for construction materials from the head office after she had left the company,” Mr. Vanak said.

“After meeting with the clients and inspecting their financial reports and other expenditures, the company determined that Ms. Phath Chakriya looted more than $370,000,” he said.

Mr. Vanak alleged that Ms. Chakriya took the money from the company over a nine-month period last year, giving the funds to her husband for his own business – selling the Thai energy drink Carabao.

“My client is demanding his stolen money back and is asking the court to strongly punish both of them,” the lawyer added.

Neither the deputy prosecutor at the court nor the couple’s defense lawyer could be reached for comment.
