A mother was charged yesterday over the murder of her two-month-old baby in Siem Reap province’s Saut Nikum district on Tuesday.
Nop Sarak, Saut Nikum district police chief, said the accused, Sim Sinaun, 38, is an alcoholic and was abandoned by her husband, leading her to become depressed.
“Normally, she looked after her daughter. However, on the day of the murder, she was drunk and also sad that her husband abandoned her. So she squeezed her baby’s nose until she died,” he said.
“When the daughter died, she pretended to call for help from neighbours, lying to them that her baby had a heart attack, but they did not believe her,” he added. “So they reported the incident to us.”
The suspect was sent to the provincial police station on Tuesday, said Mr Sarak.
Provincial police officials confirmed that the suspect was sent to court yesterday and charged.
Provincial court spokesman Yin Sreang said that the accused was charged with murder. If found guilty, she faces 10 to 15 years imprisonment.
