A family was killed in a traffic accident between a motorbike and a large truck carrying soil in Kandal province’s Ang Snoul district on Sunday evening.

Chim Sotha, deputy district police chief, said four victims died instantly after the motorbike they were on was hit by the truck coming from the opposition direction in Lumhach commune.

“Four people died and all of them are relatives,” he said. “According to the investigation, we can see that the soil truck was encroaching upon the lane of the motorbike coming from the opposite direction.”

A provincial police report identified the four victims as Morn Chimy, 26, his wife Hieng Kimsan, 24, their two-year-old son and nine-year-old niece.

Sok Samnang, another deputy district police chief, said that the driver of the truck was arrested after the accident.

“We managed to arrest the driver and he was unscathed from any mob violence because our forces descended on the scene quickly,” he said. “We have to blame both sides actually. The truck was driving in the lane of the motorbike, but there should not be four people on one motorbike.”

Mr Samnang said the truck driver was set to make his first court appearance yesterday.
