More than 100 pieces of timber were destroyed at a warehouse in Mondulkiri province’s Pech Chreada district yesterday after a forest fire spread to the company’s grounds.

Mondulkiri provincial governor Svay Sam Eang said the flames spread from a forest area and destroyed timber stocks belonging to the Dai Nam company in Pech Chreada district’s Pou Chrey commune.

“The fire started in the forest and spread to the company’s timber,” he said.

He added that villagers cooking in the forest may have led to the forest fire.

“They cooked food in the forest and then didn’t extinguish their fire,” he said. “It was very careless.”

He added that authorities are still totaling the amount of damage caused by the inferno.

Ouk Samnang, Mondulkiri provincial police chief, said that fire trucks struggled to access the blaze and put it out.

“It was very far away from the station, so the trucks took a while to get there,” he said.
