Police in Siem Reap province arrested two fake monks for drug use at a rental room in Svay Dangkum commune and defrocked them before detaining them at the police station on Monday night.
Acting commune police chief Soun Sophan said the two suspects were accused by villagers of being fake monks and drug users.
“We cooperated with Siem Reap town police officers to arrest them for drug use.
“There were two of them and when we checked on them at the rental room, we found out they were fake monks,” Mr Sophan said.
Mr Sophan added that they were forcibly defrocked because they were impersonating monks.
“After the arrest, they were sent to Wat Chork pagoda where they were defrocked before being sent to the district police office for further action,” he said. The suspects were identified as Vin Samnang, 27, and Oeun Ut, 17, who were both from Banteay Meanchey province.
Town police chief Tep Channa declined to provide further details. “I cannot give any details of the case because we are still working on it,” he said.
