Preah Sihanouk provincial police arrested three Chinese nationals on Saturday for kidnapping one of their fellow countrymen for a ransom of $800,000.

Provincial police chief Choun Narin said yesterday the suspects had planned an elaborate plot to enter Cambodia, identify up to six wealthy Chinese investors, and kidnap them.

He identified the suspects as Zheng Rongmao, 26, Dai Hongda, 23, and Lin Jipei, 24. He said the trio was carrying various fake passports to be able to escape the country once their crimes had been committed.

However, their first kidnapping did not go as planned. They kept track of the car driven by their victim, a Porsche, and followed it to a remote location, where they held him at gunpoint, restrained him, and brought him to a rental house.

About two hours later, the kidnappers called the victim’s family to demand the $800,000 ransom.

However, collaboration between the family and the police led to the arrest of the three men later that same night at the rental house, Mr Narin said.

Police rescued the victim, Li Fujie, 47, who was unharmed. They also seized the kidnappers’ car, six mobile phones, a handgun, a knife, zip ties, and at least two fake passports.

The three men are being held at the provincial police station for questioning.
