Police in Takeo province’s Kirivong district last night cracked down on 40 locations where marijuana was being grown, seizing 12,541 plants.

District police chief Yuk Sarat said 68 police officers carried out the raids in Preah Bat Choam Chum commune.

He added that police also found 62 ponds near to where the plants were being grown, which locals used to water the illegal crops.

“Police did not arrest the people who planted the marijuana because they escaped during the crackdown,” he said.

“Now police have destroyed the marijuana and are looking for the people who planted it, because this is not the first time it has been found in the area.”

In November, nearly 30,000 marijuana plants were also destroyed by police in Kirivong district.

Between January and November, about 250,000 marijuana plants were destroyed.

Mr Sarat said police find it difficult to arrest the suspects because they commit their crimes in remote and mountainous areas.

They can see police coming and escape, he noted.
