The Cambodia Import-Export Inspection and Fraud Repression Directorate General (Camcontrol) opened a new laboratory in Preah Sihanouk province on Wednesday to monitor food and ensure its safety.

The new food safety lab occupies a two-storey building and is staffed by four Camcontrol officers.

“The new mini-lab will makes us more efficient when it comes to analysing market food and protect the health of the consumer,” Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak said at the inauguration ceremony.

He added that Camcontrol officers will confiscate poor quality products and ban those that are illegally brought into the country, without having to send them first to Phnom Penh for analysis.

Camcontrol has opened two other laboratories in the country, in Svay Rieng and Banteay Meanchey. Three more are in construction in Kampong Cham, Prey Veng and Takeo, and will open next year.
