The National Blood Transfusion Centre (NBTC) in cooperation with pharmaceutical company Sanofi Cambodia ran a blood donation campaign on Friday to raise awareness of the need for more donors.
Dao Thu Nga, Head of Sanofi Cambodia Operations, said Sanofi employees gave blood to help reverse a national shortage of supplies.
She said the need for blood for patients was high – especially for use in surgery and emergency cases.
“The blood donation campaign is important and necessary to save lives. It fills a need by giving the valuable gift of blood,” Ms Nga said.
“It was for the first time that Sanofi Cambodia has conducted a blood donation campaign to save the lives of people who are in urgent need of blood in hospitals.”
She said donation was an act of sharing, of kindness and love. “Our purpose is to also help raise the awareness of the need to donate blood.
“The volunteer donation is a way for the company staff to show their solidarity and commitment towards the community,”
NBTC director Dr Hok Kim Cheng said that across the country, there were requests for more than 200 units of blood a day. Phnom Penh alone needs 80 to 100 units per day.
However, there is an inadequate supply of safe blood.
“Only 30 percent of blood donated in Cambodia came from volunteers by the end of 2016,” he said, adding that figure was lower than in neighbouring countries.
Dr Cheng said the NBTC is very aware of the critical need for safe blood to save the lives of victims.
“I am thankful for Sanofi Cambodia’s staff for donating their blood to save people and I also encourage them to continue to do so as a humanitarian activity.”
He said giving blood saves lives life. A single unit of donated blood can save up to three lives.
Sanofi Cambodia employee Kong Samrathana said: “I am donating blood to help save lives and because I wanted to do something good for the community.”
