Authorities arrested a murder suspect on Monday who threw a grenade at Siem Reap provincial military police officers, hospitalising one, in Oddar Meanchey province on Saturday.

Major Uy Choy was injured by the grenade attack after forces surrounded the suspect’s hideout. Hem Thy, the suspect, managed to escape capture after tossing the grenade.

Mr Thy was wanted over a murder in Kandal province’s Khsach Kandal district on October 31, when he allegedly shot dead Sor Socheat after being hired to carry out the murder.

On Saturday, Siem Reap provincial military police officers joined Anlong Veng district military police to surround the suspect’s hideout.

Following his escape, police again tracked him down on Monday, surrounding him in a forest in Anlong Veng district, from where he fired shots at police but injured none before being detained.

“We along with the district military police arrested the suspect in the forest. Before we could arrest him, there was also an exchange of fire,” Anlong Veng district deputy police chief Nien La said.

The suspect remains at the Oddar Meanchey provincial military police headquarters for further questioning.
