A draw would be a big achievement, says Sovannara

Cambodian national team coach Prak Sovannara has targeted a draw for Cambodia in their meeting with Jordan tonight in their penultimate 2019 AFC Cup qualifying group game.

“We know that it will be a tough game against them and for me personally, it will be one of the toughest in my career,” he said.

“Playing against one of Asia’s top ranked sides won’t be easy for us,” added the former Boeung Ket tactician during yesterday’s press conference.

With four games played, Cambodia have recorded only one victory, over Afghanistan in July, a record which led to former head coach Leonardo Vitorino’s dismissal from Cambodian football’s top job.

Asked whether Sovannara’s Cambodian side can spring a surprise after their 7-0 mauling in their last encounter in Oman in March, he was realistic in his assessment of his team’s chances.

“Every team has ambition, but a draw would be a big achievement for the team. Jordan, individually, have better technique than us as well as the speed and strength to keep us from playing our game, said coach Sovannara.

“Psychologically, they are stronger than Cambodia. But they also have the pace than can trouble us at the back. But we will do our best to play.”

Cambodia, who were thrashed 5-0 by Vietnam in their last group match, face Afghanistan in their final group match in March 2018.

Going into tonight’s match, Cambodia sit third in the four-team group and on three points – a point ahead of the Afghans. Jordan and Vietnam sit in first and second respectively on eight points, with Jordan leading on goal difference.

Tonight’s match will be played at the Olympic Stadium and will be broadcast on both BTV and the Football Federation of Cambodia’s Facebook page. Stadium tickets are priced at 5,000 riel for category 2 and 10,000 riel for category 1 tickets.
