An officer from the Siem Reap province military police was injured on Saturday when a suspect threw two grenades at a force of about 20 police officers.

The injured officer, Uy Choy, is a major in the criminal bureau.

His attacker, Heap Thy, 45, threw the grenades when he realised his Oddar Meanchey hide-out was surrounded.

The officers had a warrant for Mr Thy’s arrest over a murder in Kandal province.

Mr Choy’s life is not in danger. Speaking from the private clinic where he is recovering in Siem Reap, he said: “I am fine now. They removed all the shrapnel from my left leg and buttock.”

He said he was the only one injured because he was standing close to the house window. The grenades preceded a firefight.

The alleged killer escaped. It is not known if he was hurt in the shooting.
