A raid on a rental house used as a showroom for a phone company on Thursday led to the seizure of more than three tonnes of luxury timber and the arrest of 19 people.

The bust was the combined effort of the Kandal province anti-economic crime police and the Takhmao forestry administration.

According to the police report, four Vietnamese nationals were among those arrested.

All were staff of the Kandal branch of the phone company, with positions ranging from branch manager, technical staff and finance managers to low-ranking workers.

Bureau chief Seng Kimthorn said that although the location is used as a branch of the company, only individuals were found to be involved.

Individuals brought the timber to hide in there. The bust came from a tip from an informant, whose identity was protected.

“The woods are all of kranhoung. There are more than 3000 kilos of it. We only arrested the workers while the Vietnamese owner fled,” he said.

The forestry administration was preparing the case to be sent to court, Mr Kimthorn said.
