Immigration police and customs officers on Tuesday arrested a Filipino woman at Siem Reap International Airport for attempting to smuggle 83 packages of cocaine into the country, a senior police official said yesterday.
Provincial anti-drug police chief Brigadier General Oum Amara said Medida Ruera, 40, who arrived at 5.20pm on a China Southern flight, was arrested when she was found to have swallowed 83 wraps of cocaine.
“Police found 1,042.58 grams of cocaine on the suspect after scanning her abdomen,” he said.
He added she was yesterday transferred to the provincial court after questioning by police, who were trying to find out if she was part of a drug trafficking network.
Prior to her arrest, Ms Ruera had already been placed on a blacklist based on foreign intelligence that suggested she was planning to smuggle drugs.
“The suspect tried to divert the police’s attention by booking an air ticket to Vietnam, however, our forces arrested her immediately at the airport,” Brig Gen Amara said.
“The suspect confessed that she had visited Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam twice before to check the feasibility of smuggling cocaine through the airports.”
He added Ms Ruera had initially boarded a flight in Brazil, transiting in Dubai and Guangzhou before she arrived in Cambodia.
“Her final destination was Malaysia,” he said.
