Police in Kampong Speu province arrested three suspects on Tuesday afternoon for cutting down a valuable hardwood tree on the premises of a school last month.
The police said the thnung tree at Wat Bontoap Primary School in Phnom Srouch district was cut down on the night of October 24.
The suspects were caught when they transported the timber for sale earlier this week in Treng Trayoeung commune.
Treng Trayoeung commune police chief Noum Virath said his forces cooperated with district police to arrest the three men.
“We arrested three people for their role in cutting down the thnung tree. It was big tree and worth a lot of money. That’s why they came from outside the district to steal it,” he said.
A provincial police report identified the three suspects as Von Vat, 27, San Vanthai, 33, and Seng Puth, 37, all from Kampong Speu’s Samraong Torng district.
Police seized a minivan and two saws from the men.
Police at provincial police headquarters said the three suspects are being held in custody for questioning. He could not confirm when they would be sent to court.
