A well-known singer and contestant on the Voice Cambodia was shot dead at a cosmetics clinic near the Apsara TV station in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmorn district yesterday.
Police said the incident happened at about 4pm in Vita Longa Clinic on the corner of street 57 and street 360 in Boeung Keng Kang commune.
The victim was 23-year-old San Sreylai, a singer signed to the Hang Meas Production Company, according to police.
A police officer, who declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the gunman was the ex-husband of the victim.
“Our police identified the murderer as Chey Rin, 53, a Finance Ministry customs officer, who murdered the victim and then killed himself inside the clinic,” he said.
Shortly after the shooting, hundreds of people surrounded the clinic leading to crowds on the streets.
A resident who declined to give his name said he heard four gunshots come from the clinic.
“I heard shots from the clinic as I was drinking coffee nearby, but I didn’t know what it was straight away,” he said.
CCTV footage of the attack in the clinic showed a woman being shot in the torso and head. The gunman then turned his weapon on himself.
Ms Sreylai was a finalist on season two of the popular Voice Cambodia show.
