Hundreds of charcoal kilns are to be moved from a rented plot of land in Kampong Speu’s Satorp Sangke commune after locals complained about the affects on their health.
Officials from Oral district yesterday raided the land and found 248 kilns used to make charcoal.
The land is owned by six different people and rented to charcoal makers from other provinces.
Oral district deputy police chief Sim Sambo said the kiln owners have asked for six weeks to move off the land.
“We went to educate them and they promised they will move within one and a half months because they want to use up all their firewood before leaving,” he said.
“Local residents complained because the smoke from the kilns was polluting the area and harming their health.”
Deputy district governor Bun Vichet said five out of six land owners have already signed a contract not to rent to charcoal makers in the future.
