The Ministry of Environment plans to inspect more than 110 factories and enterprises in Phnom Penh and Kandal province to strengthen environmental protection standards.
Ministry spokesman Sao Sopheap said officials will inspect more than 110 factories by the end of September or early October.
“The officials will continue to inspect all kinds of enterprises and factories that can cause environmental pollution including garment factories, laundry facilities, and other enterprises, especially garment factories,” he said.
Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, said inspections at factories are desperately needed and must include punishment for offenders.
“If we go to inspect carelessly without being strict, employers will continue to apply the same measures,” he said. “As we have seen in the past, hundreds of garment workers often faint in their factories due to inefficient ventilation and the inhalation of chemicals.”
