Prime Minister Hun Sen’s bodyguard unit yesterday commemorated its nine-year anniversary in a ceremony in Kandal province, where its commander vowed to defend the premier while boasting of the unit’s artillery.

General Hing Bun Heang, the unit’s commander, said during the ceremony that rumours were circulating regarding the unit’s artillery.

“Some people have said we only have 50 tanks, but we have 100 tanks,” he said. “These modern weapons are kept to ensure public order and peace; they are not kept for war.”

Gen Bun Heang, who is also the deputy commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, added that it is his unit’s duty to protect Mr Hun Sen, his family, and the legal government.

“Those in the bodyguard unit will sacrifice their lives to defend the legal government that is led by Samdech Hun Sen,” he said.

Sok Eysan, spokesman for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, said the unit not only defends Mr Hun Sen and the government, but also aids citizens in need after natural disasters.
