Police in Koh Kong province have arrested a labour department official after the court issued an arrest warrant for fraud over the disappearance of about $34,000.

Khim Sane, chief of the judicial police office, identified the suspect as Tieng Sareth, 45, chief of the labour department’s inspection and dispute resolution office.

“I went to his office to implement the arrest warrant,” said Mr Sane. “He was temporarily detained at the Koh Kong provincial prison on the Monday.”

According to the local media, Mr Sareth defrauded the department of the money in January last year.

“The working group of the provincial labour department filed the lawsuit to the court directly and I just went to implement the arrest warrant,” Mr Sane added. “As I know, he took about $34,000 of state money and that state money is related to work books and worker’s insurance.”

Un Sovantheany, spokesman for the provincial court, said that Mr Sareth was charged with fraud.

“The prosecutor of the Koh Kong provincial court charged him with fraud and the case is in the hands of the investigating judge,” he said.
