Members of the Royal Cambodian Armed forces (RCAF) have won 295 medals from sporting events like the SEA Games, Olympic Games and other major sporting events over the last 18 years, officials said on Saturday.

General Tea Banh, a deputy prime minister and the Minister of National Defence, presided over a military sports competition and a show of military equipment on Saturday at Koh Pich, which Prime Minister Hun Sen also visited.

General Banh said the RCAF had defended and protected the nation and prevented the opposition party’s alleged colour revolution movement, as well as joining sports events to promote Cambodia.

“In fact, for 18 years the RCAF sent its officials to join in the SEA Games, Asian Games and other world sport events and they won a total of 295 medals including 89 gold medals, 68 silver medals and 143 bronze medals, 45 championships and two belt championships and more,” he said.

He added that on behalf of the government, veteran soldiers and himself, he congratulated the organisers of the event.

“I take this chance to support and encourage the working group for organising this and continuing to cooperate with ministries, involved units of the private sector and location authorities to organise this event every year,” he said.
