More than 40 garment workers in Kampong Speu province were injured when their truck overturned on Tuesday.
Chek Borin, director of the provincial labour department, said the accident happened in Oudong district and injured 41 workers, nine seriously.
They were sent to the hospital for treatment.
“There were 55 workers in the truck when it overturned due to the driver’s careless driving. He was also injured, suffering a broken leg,” he said.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver was speeding and the accident occurred when he attempted to overtake another vehicle.
“We often cooperate with the National Social Security Fund, local authorities, and factories to educate truck drivers about driving safely when carrying workers in the province, but some remain careless,” Mr Borin said.
“Only the drivers themselves can protect the workers’ safety when travelling through the province,” he added.
A report by the National Road Safety Committee released last week said workers’ truck accidents occurred 26 times in 2017, causing four deaths and 484 injuries.
It said most workers’ truck accidents occurred in Svay Rieng, Preah Sihanouk, Takeo, Kampong Chhang, Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Prey Veng, and Kandal provinces. They were mostly caused by careless driving and technical faults in vehicles.
